The Saugus versus The Swedish: The Frozen Four Battle No One Is Talking About

Of all the storylines heading into tonight’s Boston University versus University of Vermont Frozen Four semifinal matchup, one has been overwhelmingly ignored: the fact that UVM’s Viktor Stalberg and BU’s Jason Lawrence are currently tied for fourth in the country in goals at 24 a piece, and are the last two players still playing this season from the top five in that list.

Whoever wins the battle tonight will have the opportunity to move into either second or third on that list, seeing that both MacGregor Sharp (26 goals) and Brock Bradford (25 goals) and their teams are no longer in the tournament. (Air Force powerhouse Jacques Lamoureux’s 33 goals might be a tough target to hit for either Stalberg or Lawrence, but hey, stranger things have happened in two games.)

So who’s going to win the battle tonight, come out ahead on the goal statistics and have the opportunity to add more goals to their stats on Saturday? To figure this out, I consulted with Cameron Frye, fellow hockey blogger, and professed fan of “The Swedish”, and we each took our own positions on the topic. I will let Ms. Frye go first:

My dear Twitter friend and fellow Boston hockey blogger @cameronfrye and I had the opportunity to attend and cover WBCN and Aaron Ward’s Cuts for a Cure event on Wednesday afternoon. While she is the far better photographer than I – it helps that she has the souped up, newer version of my trusty ol’ Kodak – I tried my best to snap some interesting photos myself of the Boston Bruins players who offered their locks up for shearing by the highest bidder.

I hate Duke. Darn dominant college basketball power…you know, Duke, you’ve had enough wins and titles and all of that. Why not just share the wealth? Let a team like Binghamton win once. Really, Coach K, don’t you want to like, take a vacation or something?

Now that I’ve gotten that bitterness out of my system, let me introduce you to the …On Being a Sports Girl Hockey East Semifinal Live Blog. I’m going to be there from the very beginning of the UMass Lowell Red & Blue Pigeons versus Northeastern Stick-Throwers game till the very end of the Boston University versus Boston College game. I honestly enjoy being in an arena for hours and hours on end, especially during early tournament games where I have like an entire section of the Garden to myself.

So to help out those of you unable to join me at the TDBanknorth Garden tonight, I’ll be sharing my witty observations (like if BC’s band breaks out any new pep band renditions of hip-hop songs) here through CoverItLive. I may not be delivering hard-hitting hockey analysis – I mean, I could if I wanted to, but what’s the fun in that? – but who needs that when I can muse about the fact that a riverhawk is really a pigeon?

Oh, but I will provide play-by-play at one point tonight – my favorite event of the Hockey East season, the Annual Mascot Game. My money is on the Skating Monk of Providence College – he had a rough year, and he may be out for revenge. I was hoping that Bananas the Bear might not be as depressed as he was last year, but I think he might be even more. Bummer Bananas – you really could be a contender in this game, especially if you pick up the patented Simon Danis-Pepin defense of literally sitting on the forward closest to you. Oh, and the Merrimack Warrior will inexplicably show up. Who invited him?

Oh wait, they’re still in our league? Oops.

The Best Television Show You’re Also Not Watching, or My Father’s Love of Discount Stores is Hereditary

Warning: there is a little bit of an adult reference in the middle of this post. It’s pretty tame when compared to most out there these days, but I wanted to warn you all ahead of time in the event you’re the Duggar Family or something.

We all know I have a very weird taste in television programming. Last September, I devoted an entire blog post to my favorite TV show of the moment, Connect with English. Yes, ESL instructional programming. But it involved Mark Consuelos (aka Kelly Ripa’s husband)! How could I not watch?

Well, dear readers, I’ll open up another page of my personal TV Guide and introduce you to another television show that you should be watching, because it brings me great joy:

Dollar Bill’s Discount World.

Every Saturday morning, at 8am, I drag myself out of bed – despite my pure inability to stand the mornings – to watch this show on MyTV New England. It’s a program that consists of a man in his early fifties or so – Dollar Bill – literally racing through his giant warehouse of a bargain discount warehouse store in Derry, New Hampshire, telling his viewers all of the amazing deals he has that weekend. He wears a primary-colored umbrella hat with dollar bills strung from it’s ends, which dance around his head by the gale force of power he creates by running and jumping around his store, which appears to be roughly the size of a hockey arena.

The 2009 …On Being a Sports Girl Unofficial Beanpot All Tournament Team

One of my loyal readers and a fellow Boston University hockey fan, Scott, emailed me late Monday evening asking if there was a Beanpot All Tournament Team. After searching high and low, I was able to determine that there was not. All the Beanpot awards is the Eberly Trophy for the top goaltender, and the Beanpot Most Valuable Player.

Well, that all changes tonight, because here at …On Being a Sports Girl, we have determined an 2009 Unofficial Beanpot All Tournament Team. I consulted with my dear reader Scott, my fellow Terrier blogger Joe of Let’s Go Terriers, and my Twitter followers for input on who should make up such a team. Ground rules: Nick Bonino and Brad Thiessen were inelgible because they won the MVP and Eberly; there has to be a representative from each school; and I’m going to name eight team members because…well, because it’s my blog and I can if I want to.
