Doing It Old School – 1951 Boston University Hockey

After hearing from several online sources that a nice chunk of the Life magazine photo archive has been made available via Google Images, I took a minute this evening to go online and check it out. I easily spent 45 minutes this evening looking at photos. The photos are in wonderful quality and are a great resource of American life from the mid 20th century.

There are a ton of photos in the archive that I found interesting – including a bunch of awesome gymnastics ones that I’ll share in an upcoming post – but since hockey is my first sports love at the moment (after the Bills have done the Mexican Hat Dance on my heart once again), I figured I would first share my three favorite Boston University hockey photos.

The Everyone’s Favorite Goalie Watch – Recalled to Pittsburgh

033108_curry

In this edition of “The Everyone’s Favorite Goalie” watch (insert overly dramatic TV news graphic here), news out of Wilkes-Barre this morning is that John Curry is on his way to Pittsburgh, where he will back up Dany “Still Can’t Find Anyone Who Can Pronounce His Last Name” Sabourin.

This is the first regular season call-up for Everyone’s Favorite Goalie.  He spent the pre-season with Pittsburgh, and technically was on the roster when they played their first two regular season games in Europe, but did not dress.

The Penguins take on the Minnesota Wild tonight at 7pm on Versus.  No word yet as to when the Curry 36 Pittsburgh Penguins jerseys become available on NHL.com (just kidding.)

Calling Out the Superfans and the Tsongas Arena Shopping Cart

Oh, the Superfans.

Oh, the Superfans.

They wear mustard colored cheap t-shirts with burgundy writing, either given out or sold by their bookstore.  Maybe 2% of them own hockey jerseys.  And if the hockey team is playing at the same time as their football or basketball team, they magically dissapear.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Boston College Superfans.

The Superfans, or Stuperfans, or whatever you wish to refer to them as, are oft-complained about.  I really don’t dislike them, I’m just amazed at their…indifference? Lack of jerseys? Bandwagon jumping? Pep band’s rendition of Ridin’ Dirty by Chamillionaire? (You have not lived until you’ve heard a tuba blast out the first few lines of that song.  Really.  It’s made my Beanpot the last two years.)

Someone Decided That I May In Fact Be A Good Writer

A bit of self promotion for a moment:  I have recently become a lacrosse writer for Examiner Boston, a growing online news page.  Everyone jump up and do a happy dance with me!

So in addition to maintaining this blog (which I am trying to do more things with in the coming weeks, like move to an actual factual page of its own), I will also be writing at least three articles a week for the Examiner.  You’ll be able to find my articles here.  I’ll also add this link to the blogroll on the side of the page.
