Did the University of Denver Just Squash the BU-BC Winter Classic Rumors?

LetsGoDU, one of my favorite college hockey blogs, released the University of Denver’s (DU) 2009-10 season schedule today. Denver annually hosts the Wells Fargo Denver Cup on or around New Year’s Day, and this upcoming season it stays true to form, with the Cup’s first round will be played January 1st.

With the release of Denver’s 09-10 schedule came the release of the 2010 Denver Cup participants: Denver, St. Lawrence, Nebraska-Omaha, and Boston College. BC will play St. Lawrence in the 4:35pm game on January 1st.

The Eagles inclusion on this release seemingly squashes all of the unsubstantiated buzz and rumour surrounding a possible Boston University-Boston College game being a part of an all-but-officially-confirmed Boston Bruins Winter Classic date at Fenway Park on January 1st. For a while, some speculated that the somewhat delayed release of both BU’s and BC’s 09-10 schedule was an indicator that possible participation in the Winter Classic setup at Fenway was being considered. Many Hockey East teams have already released their schedules for the upcoming year, but the two marquee teams had not, leading some to believe something was in the works.

Of course, BC could always pull out of the Denver Cup if a more alluring matchup came through, so I don’t think this DU release is the definitive answer on this story. But stay tuned…

Epic College Hockey Headline Fail

I Tweeted about this earlier tonight, but I took a screen capture to save the mistake for perpetuity:

"BC top seed in NCAA hockey tournament" Epic headline fail.

Yes, someone messed up or purposely changed the headline while taking a story off the wire for the Connecticut Post, and incorrectly stated that Boston College was the top seed for the NCAA Tournament. Really? Last I checked, BC didn’t even make it to the tournament this year because of their downfall in the second part of the season.

Is this a case of revenge by an Eagles fan, or honest mistake? My fellow Twitterer and BU fan, @brandoneps, claims that it may be revenge:

“Too funny, especially because it’s an AP article and someone ACTIVELY had to change the headline that came through the wire.”

I searched the web some more, and found the article correctly headlined on Google News and on the Associated Press website. Hmm….

Countdown to Senior Night: The Battle of the BUs – A Senior Day in Every Sense

This week at …On Being a Sports Girl, we have a series that I am hastily trying to put together called, “Countdown to Senior Night.” (And when I mean hastily put together, I mean it came to me as I was down in the Food Court getting lunch 45 minutes ago.) Originally hatched to be a review and reflection upon this year’s Boston University hockey senior class, I decided to open it up to posts about senior days or nights in every winter sport, since we are in the midst of a whole host of them. Of course, we’ll have a post or six about this year’s Terrier senior class, which have cemented their places in BU hockey lore for years to come.

To kick off our series, I am reposting an oldie-but-a-goodie I wrote about Senior Day for the Binghamton University men’s basketball team in 2004. I was a senior about to head off to Boston University for graduate work, and the Bearcats’ opponent that day was the Terriers. The original post – edited to take out the non-basketball stuff that followed the original post – is after the jump.

Love the Article, Hate the Geography Lesson

I am a sucker for “local-athlete-does-good” stories. Actually, I’m just a sucker for anything about Monday’s BU victory over Harvard in the first round of the Beanpot. So I was super excited to read the “On-Campus” column on NHL.com this morning, which has the all-important “local-boy-does-good” angle on the Terriers’ game-winning-goal. (I mean, the game-winning-goal was a lazy sports reporter’s dream – local hockey player celebrates his birthday by scoring the game-winning-goal with one minute remaining at a giant college hockey tournament that he’s watched since he was five. Really. The recap writes itself. That’s like the ending to the perfect piece of “learning-to-read” fiction for 8-12 year old Canadian boys.)

But I digress. What is more important is that according to this NHL.com article, Northeastern University and Boston University are separated by the Charles River. Really? Let’s take a look.

The Arizona Cardinals Hate Me, But I Love the Icebreaker

Excuse my hiatus from the blog the past two weeks. Not only have I been pursuing other projects in my spare time, I also have been overcome with work. This is not unexpected, as any reader of my blog for the past few years knows, because when the Red Sox make the playoffs, the whole “make sure students don’t riot” responsibility gets added to my job (and several others in my office and at the university.)

I have two blog entries upcoming – one on jerseys (no, I’m not turning into UniWatch), and the other on biking. Both should be finished shortly. But here are a few short notes to tide you over.

The Arizona Cardinals hate me – In late September of 1999, Arizona Aeneas Williams slipped by San Francisco 49er center Jeremy Newberry to level a devastating hit to an already concussed Steve Young to knock him unconscious (although Young would never admit to that, the tape proves otherwise) and end Young’s career. I watched it live on Monday Night Football, and I doubt I’ll ever forget that hit.

Fast forward to October 5, 2008. Arizona Cardinal Adrian Wilson slips by a distracted Buffalo Bills offensive line to level a late hit on Bills quarterback Trent Edwards, by some reports knocking him briefly unconscious and taking him out of the game with a concussion. Thank goodness Edwards is young and the Bills have a bye this Sunday.
