The 2009 …On Being a Sports Girl Unofficial Beanpot All Tournament Team

One of my loyal readers and a fellow Boston University hockey fan, Scott, emailed me late Monday evening asking if there was a Beanpot All Tournament Team. After searching high and low, I was able to determine that there was not. All the Beanpot awards is the Eberly Trophy for the top goaltender, and the Beanpot Most Valuable Player.

Well, that all changes tonight, because here at …On Being a Sports Girl, we have determined an 2009 Unofficial Beanpot All Tournament Team. I consulted with my dear reader Scott, my fellow Terrier blogger Joe of Let’s Go Terriers, and my Twitter followers for input on who should make up such a team. Ground rules: Nick Bonino and Brad Thiessen were inelgible because they won the MVP and Eberly; there has to be a representative from each school; and I’m going to name eight team members because…well, because it’s my blog and I can if I want to.

So, without further adieu, may I present to you the 2009 …On Being a Sports Girl Unofficial Beanpot All Tournament Team:

It’s Beanpot Monday, Part Deux

Well, friends, it’s the day we have all been waiting for: #1 Boston University takes on #3 Northeastern University in what is being billed as the Beanpot final to end all Beanpot finals. According to several news outlets, this is the first time a #1 ranked team has faced a #3 ranked team in the Beanpot final.

The rest of Boston is off to inexplicably jump on the Northeastern University bandwagon – which makes me angry, because if the Beanpot is quintessentially Boston, why are Bostonians openly rooting against a team with 10 players with Boston ties, including 4 on the top line alone? Does that make any sense? You want to openly root against guys who have dreamed of Beanpot glory since they knew what ice skates were?

I’ll be live tweeting from the Garden again, and I promise to do a far better job than last weeks debacle, where I spent most of the third period covering my face. I’ll start with the Boston College – Harvard University matchup at 5pm because I’ll use any excuse to spend more time in the TDBanknorth Garden (I have a thing for arenas) and because I want to see Harvard freshman goalie Matt Hoyle again in an unbiased atmosphere. Hoyle faced 50 shots and saved 45 of them against Yale on Friday night, and Harvard still lost 5-1. I think Hoyle might be the real deal for Harvard, yet unfortunately, the rest of his team can’t get things together.

If you enjoy hockey of any kind, I implore you to follow the Northeastern – BU game. This is arguably the biggest game in college hockey yet this year, and already is the most highly anticipated college hockey game I have ever experienced.

Well, This Just Stinks – CN8 Shutting Down, According to Sources

Updated below with comment from Comcast Sports Net.

A big blow to Boston University and University of Vermont hockey fans – according to David Scott, of Scott’s Shots (one of my favorite sports blogs, by the way – when he speaks, I listen),
CN8 will be shuttering it’s New England operations. This includes closing the studios right across from the College of Fine Arts building on the BU campus.

Both BU and UVM had contracts with CN8 for broadcast rights to several men’s hockey games. CN8 was to televise six remaining men’s hockey games –

Dec. 5 vs. Boston College (CN8)
Jan. 3 at Denver Cup (CN8)
Jan. 17 vs. Boston College (CN8)
Jan. 24 at New Hampshire (CN8)
Feb. 21 at Northeastern (CN8)
Feb. 28 vs. Massachusetts (CN8)

According to Scott, CN8’s operations will cease in “early Janaury 2009,” leaving five of those six games without a TV home. Scott does say, however, that Comcast Sports Net may pick up the sports programming. However, their primary responsibility is to the Celtics, so I worry that college hockey might get lost in the shuffle.

If CSN decided to pick and choose what games they select, an educated guess would be that January 17 game against BC will be of most interest, if the early part of the season is any indication. One would also hope that CSN would pick up the Denver Cup game on January 3rd, since many of us Terrier fans can’t afford the $400 plane fare right after the holiday season (but trust you me, I tried!)

It remains to be seen what BU or UVM will do in the wake of this announcement. Big kudos to Scott for getting this news.

UPDATE: According to the comment below, Comcast Sports Net will pick up several games on CN8’s college hockey schedule. Thanks to Tim from Comcast Sports Net for responding right away, and for Comcast for taking care of us college hockey fans.

Everyone’s Favorite Goalie is Back to Normal. Thank Goodness.

Early word this morning out of Wilkes-Barre Scranton, where Everyone’s Favorite Goalie started last night and stopped 31 shots for a 3-1 win against the San Antonio Rampage. After letting one up early in the second period, Curry then held strong while the Penguins scored three unanswered goals. San Antonio ended up going 0 of 7 on the power play.

San Antonio wasn’t the most difficult of opponents (they were 2-5 going into this game), but still, it’s good to see Curry play an entire game, make a significant amount of saves, and not get rattled by the early goal (not that he ever did in college.) Let’s hope he can continue to put his injury woes behind him.

The Penguins next play the Houston Aeros on Sunday at 5:05pm (4:05pm in Aeros land.)

And in other hockey news, I don’t know how I held out until Saturday to post this, but Boston University had the honor of having both the men’s and women’s Hockey East Players of the Week. The women are ranked #8 in the nation, beat #5 ranked New Hampshire in a shootout on Thursday, and will take on Providence tonight at home. With a win, the BU women will remain on top of the Hockey East standings. They are in the midst of a six game win streak.

The men are now ranked #3 in the nation, and take on the Vermont Random Imaginary Cats (aka Catamounts) tonight. Until last night, they had the leading goal scorer in Hockey East (the FWNICM.) Unfortunately, Boston College’s Brock Bradford took over first with two goals in their overtime win last night against Merrimack (Really, BC? You needed overtime to win against Merrimack? How are you ranked second in the nation again?) The FWNICM needs a hat trick tonight to reclaim the lead outright, or two to tie.

And if the FWNICM scores a hat trick in a game I cannot see, I will be miffed. But that would be my luck. So you heard it here first.

Let’s ignore the Buffalo Bills lost to the freakin’ Dolphins today, shall we? I was having a glorious sports weekend, which included the FWSNBN becoming the star of the season thus far for the Boston University men’s hockey team, and then – bam, the Bills had to go lose. Unacceptable, Mr. Edwards, just unacceptable. I will not be buying your jersey t-shirt anytime soon.

Or maybe I will.

So in an effort to ignore the silly annoying Bills (really guys, you had to go lose to the Dolphins?!), I will devote this evening’s post to the amusing search engine phrases that my blog comes up as referencing. The best, of course, being from two weeks ago:
